[EN] Mario Lisboa was born within a family of photographers. His great-grandfather, Ricardo Ribeiro, founded in 1892 one of the first photographic studio in Portugal. Thenceforth, and at the same place, 5 generations embraced this art so far.
Raised in the studio, his grandmother Matilde and daughter of the photographer Ricardo Ribeiro showed artistic skills since an early age. During her childhood she colored pictures by hand, retouched glass plates and took portraits using natural light.
Later on, her mother Tidy and granddaughter of Ricardo Ribeiro, dedicated herself to photography after concluding her course, as well as his uncles António and Alice.
As for Mario Lisboa, photography belongs to his daily life since childhood. After completing 15 years of age, Mario starts helping in the laboratory. Afterwards, he starts working with studio photographs and developed abstract photography using paper purchased by his grandfather during the 2nd World War.
When he is 16 years old, he has been the first travel alone to Ceuta (North Africa) and some European countries such as Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.
After his return to Portugal, Mario Lisboa decides to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he resides for 4 years. During this period, he travels through the whole country while studying and working in an Art Gallery. He also takes the chance to visit South America, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Paraguay and Argentina.
While registering his journey through pictures, he consolidates his taste for traveling as a way to pursue new cultures and distinct civilizations. Life in a very different reality compared to his home country definitely influences his photographic route while keeping distance from the conventional photography that was practiced in that time.
Returning to Portugal, he displays some of his work on abstract and travel photography. Before traveling to Switzerland, where he resides in Lausanne for 4 years, he helps his mother at the studio.
